Friendship -Cole Porter

This poem was used in one group's Guides Own on friendship. Someone asked for me to post it. It's a good and goofy one!


Friendship

 If you're ever in a jam,
Here I am.
If you're ever in a mess,
S.O.S.
If you ever feel so happy you land in jail,
I'm your bail.

It's friendship, friendship,
Just a perfect blendship.
When other friendships have been forgot,
Ours will still be hot.

If you're ever up a tree,
Phone to me.
If you're ever down a well,
Ring my bell.
If you ever lost your teeth and you're out to dine,
Borrow mine.

Holiday Badge Work

The winter break is a great time to work on some badges.  Many can be incorporated into family outings or holiday activities.  Here are some of our ideas:
  • Are you planning on sending out cards or presents to family and friends?  You could earn the Postal Interest Badge (page 225).
  • If you plan on hitting the slopes or the trails you could earn your Skiing/Snowboarding Interest Badge (page 125).
  • For those that would rather slide on ice there is the Skating Interest Badge (page 122).
  • Maybe you prefer to stay inside in the warmth?  Cozy up with a book and earn your Reading Interest Badge (page 227).
  • Many of us will be filling ourselves with sweets.  Treat your family and earn your Tasty Treats Interest Badge (page 204).
Or you can choose from any of the other 80 badges available in your Guide Program Book.
We have already given you a head start on your Science Interest Badge (page 260) by completing activity number six.

 This is also a good time for our second and third years to make a decision on whether or not to work towards their Lady Baden Powell Award.  More information can be found by following the link at the top of the page.

International Day of the Girl

As of 2011 the UN has declared that October 11th is International Day of the Girl Child. The 2015 theme as set out by the UN is The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030. This week during our meeting we made art featuring our positive traits and learned about overlooked women in STEM fields.  The women we learned about are:
  • Caroline Herschel--the first woman to discover a comet (she would discover eight in total) and a winner of a gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society.
  • Mary Anning--she discovered the ichthyosaurus, long-necked plesiosaurs, a pterodactyl and up to thousands of other fossils that have helped create a picture of the marine world during the Jurassic period.
  • Maria Mitchell--at seventeen she started a school to teach girls math and science.  An avid astronomer she was the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the first female professor of astronomy in the United States.
  • Mary Somerville--defying her father's wishes at fourteen she took up the study of alegbra and mathematics.  She later would perform studies on magnetism and wrote papers on astronomy, chemistry, physics and mathematics.  She may be best know for her translation of Pierre-Simon Laplace’s The Mechanism of the Heavens.

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child and while helping to further the rights of women and girls in Canada and throughout the world.

Summer Camp Registration Open

Applications for 2015 Girl Guide Summer Camp Programs have now opened.

In Ontario our summer camps run out of six different locations:
There are MANY different camp options for Guide-aged girls.  The following are all of the overnight camps available to Guides this year:
Our Spring camp will take place in tents for any girls worried about having no experience before going away for the summer.
Day Camp registration will be opening mid-February.
