16 Days of Action Against Gender Violence

During our meeting on Tuesday we took part in the UN's 16 Days of Action Against Gender Violence learning about the GGC suggested themes of conflict and peace.

The girls brainstormed the different ways that violence can present itself; speaking about physical, verbal, emotional and sexual violence. We did two activities demonstrating some of the barriers to communication and talked about ways to overcome them. Later they depicted peace and conflict through skits.

Many of the girls had a good (if unfortunate) understanding of some of disadvantages that face women today, citing unequal pay, differences in sports and violence in intimate relationships.

Some significant days that still remain in the 16 day campaign are:

  • November 29--International Women and Human Rights Defenders Day
  • December 1--World AIDS Day
  • December 5--International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development
  • December 6--National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women; Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre
  • December 10--International Human Rights Day, anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The UN Women invite everyone to ORANGE your neighbourhood as part of the UNiTE to End Violence Against Women.

Guiding Mosaic Info Night

Guiding Mosaic 2016 will be taking place in Sylvan Lake, Alberta over the week of July 9th-17th.  This is an international camp that will draw Guides/Scouts from the 145 countries that are a part of WAGGGS.  Our second and third year Guides (girls born in 2003-2004) will be old enough to attend this camp.  More information can be found here

Guider Erin attended the last Guiding Mosaic and would be happy to tell you about the adventures that she had.

Our unit will not be attending this camp but girls can register as 'lones' and be placed with a local attending unit.

There is an upcoming information session on October 26th, from 7 PM - 8 PM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church (49 Queen Street North, Kitchener, ON)
